ARTHUR EMIL WAGNER
Arthur Emil Wagner Reg. No. 2464 (WW1) and SX 11640 (WW2) was the youngest son of Mr F.D Wagner and Mrs. Annie Wagner of Rosslyn Park, South Australia. He was born on 6th June 1896 at Dimboola in Victoria. He enlisted on 30th March 1915 in Adelaide. He was 20 years of age when he sailed on HMAT Kanowna as part of the 10th Infantry Battalion, for Gallipoli. He arrived in Gallipoli on 18th September 1915. In April 1916 he arrived in Marseilles, France. He was a witness to the capture of C.S.M Andrew Stewart Duncan, who was listed as missing. In September 1916 Arthur Wagner was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the arm. He was again wounded in February 1918, this time he sustained a broken lower jaw. He was transferred to England for treatment. He was pronounced medically unfit for service, “not due to misconduct”, his papers stated, and he returned to Australia. He had served 3 Years 182 days in service of which 3 Years 39 days were overseas.
In 1941 Arthur Emil Wagner again rejoined the army. This time as a driver in 4th Res. Motor Company, he was 45 years of age. By this time he had two children over 16 and one under 16. He served in Singapore and Malaya, and taken prisoner by the Japanese. He was released from prison on 15th September 1945. In his second enlistment he had served 1,954 days in total and only 298 were served in Australia. In December 1918 he married Marie Irene Morgan of Maylands S.A.
Arthur Emil Wagner died on 29th July 1968 and is buried in Centennial Park Cemetery South Australia, Derrick Gardens, Path 8, Grave 610A. One of many South Australians who served in both world wars.
