Campbelltown Soldier WW1
JOHN FREDERICK WILLIAM McDONALD
John Frederick William McDonald Reg. No 1131, was the son of John McDonald. He was born in Arbroath Scotland in 1879. He was a quarryman by trade. On the 18th of January 1915 he enlisted into the 9th Light Horse Regiment in South Australia. In his mid thirties, he left behind a wife, Florence Myrtle and five children. The five children were, two girls, Alice Myrtle, Florence Ethel Gertrude, and three boys, Hector James, Henry John, and Kenneth George. On the 26th of August 1915, he sailed on HMAT Morea, from Adelaide to Egypt. In Egypt he was transferred to the Military Police H.Q. He was temporary promoted to Corporal. On 28th April 1917 he was admitted to hospital, in Cairo, with appendicitis. He then was detached to rest camp in Port Said, Egypt, and then returned to his unit. On 19th April 1918 he was diagnosed with Typhus and died of that condition on 21st of April 1918. He was buried by the Army Chaplain, at Kantara War Cemetery Egypt, Row D grave 136.
