He was issued with The Military Medal in the 50th Battalion. He was wounded 4 times and gassed 3 times. He was discharged 19 July 1919 after 4 years 173 days service. He worked as a carpenter on his return and had a useful life. His brother Albert James Smith sn. 438 10th Battalion landed at Anzac and received the medal, returned safely after 2 years 73 days of service.
