Campbelltown Soldier WW1
FERGUS ARTHUR HEADING
Fergus Arthur Heading Reg. No. 7011 was the only son of Simon Heading and Maria, nee Mitchell of Arthur Street Prospect, South Australia. He was born in Campbelltown on March 8th 1889. An engineer by trade he was employed by J.G. Nash Engineering of Hindmarsh Square Adelaide, where he served his 5 year engineering apprenticeship.
He was successful in enlisting into the army at his second attempt. In the first he was refused due to flat feet, at the age of 27 years and six months he was accepted into the 10th Infantry Battalion. He sailed from Adelaide on HMAT Berrima A35, for Devonport, England on 16th December 1916. He was hospitalized with Pneumonia in March 1917. He was again sick in May 1918. In September of that same year he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the left hand. One year later in September 1918 he was again wounded in action with a bomb wound to the right knee.
The Red Cross in Adelaide received a request from a Miss Pasquill of Woodville, South Australia asking as to his condition and whereabouts. She was advised he had been discharged from Hospital and was on his way home to Australia. In February 1919 he did return to Australia on the Demosthenes and was discharged, unfit for service. He had served 2 years 198 days of which 2 years 75 days were served abroad.
In June 1925 he married Ivy Marion Frost. He died in 1983 and is buried in the Enfield Cemetery Adelaide.
