JAMES HAMILTON PARR
James Hamilton Parr Reg. No. 2695 was born at Kent Town, South Australia. He was the son of Horton Hamilton Parr and Marjory Isabella nee Ferguson. His mother had died on 3rd March 1896 and his father had remarried Edith Emily Swansborough. His father had been a noted sportsman, a member of the Adelaide Hunt, and was at one time the Clerk of Scales for the Adelaide Racing Club. Mrs. Francis Agnes Hann, sister, of Payneham Road Payneham, was nominated as his next of kin.
He enlisted on 5th January 1916. He sailed from Adelaide on 25th March 1916 on board HMAT Shropshire A9, for Egypt. In June 1916 he left Alexandria for Marseilles in France. In August of that year he was taken on strength of the 32nd Battalion in the field. In November he was admitted to No 38 Casualty Clearing Station with gastro enteritis and on the same day to No 10 General Hospital Rouen. At the end of November he arrived at the 5th Australian Divisional base depot at Etaples. In January 1917 he rejoined the 32nd Battalion. A month later he again returned to Etaples suffering from deafness. In March 1917 he was again hospitalized with what was thought to be Meningitis, this was soon corrected to Nephritis.
His stepmother Edith Parr had requested information through Red Cross as to the condition of her stepson. In April 1917 he was evacuated to England, to Bristol and then Dartford. On 1st November 1917 he sailed for Australia via HMAT Anchisses A68. He arrived back in Adelaide 1st January 1918, and was discharged as medically unfit (Nephritis). He had served 2 years 119 days, 1 year 281 days abroad.
James Hamilton Parr died as the result of an accident on 3rd July 1919 and is buried in the Campbelltown Cemetery.
