JOSEPH JOHN LEVERINGTON
Joseph John Leverington Reg. No. 2654 was the son of George Leverington and Sarah nee Hockam on Cook Street Payneham. His place of birth was stated as Payneham, South Australia on 2nd September 1886. He was the brother of Hedley Lloyd Leverington who was killed in action, April 2nd 1917. He was married to Sarah May Pruth Leverington nee Barker. They had one child at the time he enlisted 23rd December 1915, he had just turned 29 years of age.
He embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Shropshire A9, on 25th March 1916, bound for Alexandria Egypt. Two months later he was in France. On 11th April 1917 he was involved in the battle of Bullecourt. It was on this day he was noted as missing in action. Letters to the Red Cross from others at this battle state that he was badly injured and had been seen in a captured trench with serious injuries to his right knee and thigh. The Battalion was commanded to retreat. His brother in law, I C Barker Reg. No. 2779 wrote to Red Cross to advise them he had been advised by others of this very same thing, and he was probably a prisoner of war. This was confirmed in June 1917. He was imprisoned at Limburg then Altdamm and Valenciennes. His injuries were so severe he was repatriated to England in January 1918. The right leg had to be amputated due to the severe damage caused by a grenade.
After returning to Australia he was discharged, medically unfit, after serving 2 years and 264 days, of which 1 year 351 days were served abroad. He died in Kadina, South Australia on 25th September 1957, just after his 71st birthday. He is buried in Kadina Cemetery Path 12 Block 66.
