Robert was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in the Australian Army on 6 Sep 1915. He was originally assigned to the 13th reinforcement of the 10th Infantry Battalion and embarked for Europe on 11 Jan 1916 aboard HMAT Borda. He transferred to the 50th Infantry Battalion on 26 Feb 2016. Robert received a shrapnel wound in action to his right hand and was captured at Noreuil on 2 Apr 1917. He then became a prisoner of war and was interned at Soltau. At the end of the war he was repatriated back to London, arriving on Boxing Day 1918, where he was reunited with his brother, Norman Horton Ford, before returning to Australia.
