Campbelltown Soldier WW1
WILFRED VAUGHAN
Wilfred Vaughan Reg. No. 3516 was the son of Mrs. Rosie Vaughan of Pendleton, Lancashire, England. He was born in Manchester, England. His address at the time of enlistment was Glen Road Magill, South Australia.
He enlisted as a gunner into the 10th Infantry Battalion; he had just turned 20 years of age. They sailed from Adelaide on 27th October 1915 on the HMAT Benalla A24. Listed as his next of kin, was his wife Annie Vaughan, of “Dunalan”, Wolseley, South Australia. Annie had been advised he was sick, and had enquired through the Red Cross as to his condition. He was soon returned to his Battalion.
After the evacuation from Gallipoli the 10th Infantry Battalion were taken to Egypt. At Tel El Kabir Wilfred was transferred to the 50th Battalion. In June 1916 he was attached to the B.E.F. and left Alexandria for France. In October 1918 he was granted leave in England and then returned to his Battalion at the front. After the war finished he again returned to England, and sailed from Devonport on the S.S. China for Australia arriving on 6th June 1919. He died in 1957 and is buried in the AIF Cemetery, West Terrace, Adelaide.
