Campbelltown Soldier WW1
HAMILTON DUNBAR HERRIOTT
Hamilton Dunbar Herriott Reg. No. 2044 was the son of Stuart Robert Herriott and Catherine Trehane nee Lake of Athelstone South Australia. He was born in Athelstone where his family owned a butchers and graziers business, with another property in Waymouth Street City.
His enlistment was in Adelaide on 12th October 1915, when he joined the 32nd Infantry Battalion. HMAT Miltiades A 28 sailed from Adelaide on 7th February 1916 for Suez in Egypt. In June 1916 he left Egypt for Marseilles, France. In July 1916 he was wounded in action at Fromelles. He had sustained a serious wound to his left arm and elbow. His next of kin, mother, was advised he was seriously ill and his arm had been amputated. When she read the official casualty list it just stated, seriously ill. His sister, Miss Elliott, wrote to the Red Cross to find out the true state of his injuries. It was confirmed, as the family had been advised, his arm had been amputated and he was seriously ill. He was sent to England to the East Sussex Hospital at Hastings. In September 1916 he was transferred to the Pavilion Military Hospital Brighton.
In May 1917 he returned to Australia on the HT Themistocles and on January 3rd 1918 he was discharged medically unfit. He had served 2 Years 84 Days in the services, 1 Year 147 days abroad. Two of his brothers also served, and they also returned home after the war. They were Lance Corporal Percy Herriott Reg. No. 2045 and Pte. Hubert Ronald Herriott Reg. No. 379. H.D. Herriott died on 11th August 1939 in Adelaide, and was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery AIF section, LO Road 65 Site No 36.
